Dominic Frimpong, 20, has died from a gunshot to the head after armed men attacked Berekum Chelsea’s team bus in Ghana. The squad were returning from a Ghana Premier League match against FC Samartex.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the team were travelling from Samreboi to Berekum when gunmen opened fire around the first third of the 270-kilometre journey. The Ghana Football Association has called for justice and plans to review and strengthen travel security with key stakeholders.

The driver tried to evade a roadblock, and the bus skidded into roadside bushes. Around 22:30, players took cover as shots were fired, injuring several, including Frimpong.

He was taken to hospital in Bibiani and died while receiving treatment. Police have launched an operation to identify and arrest the attackers.

Frimpong had been with Berekum Chelsea for only four months, having joined on loan in January. The incident has shocked Ghanaian football and is being described locally as one of the nation’s darkest sporting episodes.
