In 2026, Manchester United are widely expected to inject their engine room with quality midfielders.

Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes have, at times, impressed as United’s pivot. Yet in matches such as the 1‑0 defeat to Everton, where Casemiro endured an off day, it became painfully clear why United must add further strength to Ruben Amorim’s midfield.

Some top midfielders have already been linked. Adam Wharton, Joao Gomes, Carlos Baleba, and Elliot Anderson are among those thought to be on United’s radar.

However, while these names remain under consideration, a revelation from Spain reminds United of an old flame they cannot afford to overlook.

Ederson transfer opportunity

Speaking to Spanish outlet Cadena SER, Atalanta midfielder Ederson’s agent, André Cury, dropped a bombshell regarding his client.

He admitted the Brazilian could already have left La Dea were it not for the hefty transfer fees the Serie A side had previously demanded.

Yet with the 25‑year‑old set to enter the final 18 months of his contract in January, Cury revealed there is now a genuine opportunity for big clubs to snap him up, stating:

“He’s close to the end of his contract; they could even lower his price by half, to between €30m and €40m, but he’s a spectacular player with some of the best stats in Europe for his position.”

United need to act

Such revelations should immediately catch INEOS’ attention. Ederson is a player Amorim has requested explicitly for as he looks to assemble his dream midfield.

A deal proved impossible in the summer due to Atalanta’s inflated demands, but United cannot ignore the opportunity that is now presenting itself.

Slow start to the season, though

Ederson has not enjoyed a headline‑worthy start to the campaign, which is understandable given Atalanta’s struggles.

Even so, as an all‑action, “mobile” box‑to‑box midfielder with immense work rate, physical strength, and tactical versatility, he remains exactly the dynamic profile Amorim envisions.

Pairing Ederson with someone like Anderson in United’s engine room could spell serious trouble for opponents and provide the kind of midfield balance United have been crying out for.
