Two struggling, out-of-form sides meet at Deutsche Bank Park on Wednesday as Eintracht Frankfurt host Tottenham in the final round of the Champions League league phase.
Dino Toppmöller was sacked as Eintracht Frankfurt coach following a 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen 10 days ago, but matters have not improved under interim coach Dennis Schmitt, who has lost his first two matches in charge.
Frankfurt’s last hope of progressing to the next round of the Champions League ended with a disappointing 3-2 away defeat to Qarabag in Schmitt’s first game at the helm. Die Adler then suffered another setback at the weekend, losing 3-1 to Hoffenheim, leaving them winless in their last six matches in all competitions.
Tottenham, meanwhile, impressively sit fifth in the Champions League standings after a 2-0 victory over another Bundesliga side – Borussia Dortmund – last week. Despite that, Spurs and manager Thomas Frank are also under pressure.
Aside from the Dortmund game, the north London side have failed to record a victory since the turn of the year, going five games without a win in the Premier League. They were close to defeat against Burnley at the weekend, but a late Cristian Romero goal rescued a point.
A victory in Frankfurt would guarantee Tottenham a place in the round of 16 and ease the pressure on their under-fire manager.
Scoring two Bundesliga games in a row, Arnaud Kalimuendo has made an instant impact for Eintracht Frankfurt since joining on loan from Nottingham Forest, but the striker is not eligible to play on Wednesday.
Elias Baum (knee), Jonathan Burkardt (calf) and Michy Batshuayi (foot) are also unavailable for the home side.
Lucas Bergvall (ankle), Ben Davies (ankle), Richarlison (hamstring), Rodrigo Bentancur (hamstring), Mohammed Kudus (squad), Dejan Kulusevski (knee), and James Maddison (ACL) are all set to miss out for Tottenham
