Eirik Horneland has announced to his players that he will no longer lead Ligue 2 side Saint-Etienne beyond this Saturday’s game against Boulogne-sur-Mer, according to L’Equipe. The Norwegian head coach failed to save Saint-Etienne from a Ligue 2 relegation last year after joining mid-season. Saint-Etienne had an excellent start to the Ligue 2 campaign, fueling the belief that Horneland could steer Les Verts back into the big time.
But results dwindled, leacing Saint-Etienne only in fifth place. L’Equipe reports that Horneland and Saint-Etienne were in agreement that parting ways now is the best course of action for all parties. Saint-Etienne’s search for a successor is expected to be swiftly conducted. The outlet understands that former Lens and Nice manager Franck Haise is in the running, but Haise has denied any preliminary talks with Les Verts. Philippe Montanier, who is a free agent after leading Toulouse to a shock Coupe de France title in 2023, is also a candidate.
