Eirik Horneland is set to depart ASSE after a mutual acceptance that his tenure has not worked.

According to L’Equipe, he informed his squad before Wednesday’s training that he would take charge for the last time on Saturday at 20:00 against Boulogne-sur-Mer.

The 1-0 defeat by Reims on Saturday underlined the problems. The Saint-Étienne side looked mentally fragile and bereft of ideas even with a man advantage, and the coaching tweaks failed to shift a favourable scenario.

After that sixth loss of the season he said the team was not progressing, a line that probably signalled the end despite his contract running until 2027.

A year after he was presented as the embodiment of the Kilmer project, he has not met the targets set.
