Eirik Horneland has told the Saint-Étienne squad he will leave next week, with Saturday’s match against Boulogne-sur-Mer at 20.00, matchday 21, set to be his last in charge.

According to L'Équipe, the Norwegian gathered the players at L'Étrat on Wednesday morning before training to confirm the decision. Parts of the dressing room were emotional, and some players intend to deliver a final win.

After several weeks of dialogue, the conclusion long signalled by the hierarchy has hardened. The fit has not taken.

Club owner Kilmer Sports Ventures and Horneland are set to part on good terms, sharing the view that the 0-1 defeat at Reims on Saturday, in a match played 11 against 10 from the 55th minute, was one loss too many at Auguste-Delaune. It was their sixth league defeat.

The club want a smooth handover, and the transition to his successor should happen quickly, very likely next week.

Only two candidates are on the shortlist, Philippe Montanier and Franck Haise. One of the two will be tasked with taking the Verts back to L1 immediately.
