Sunderland have confirmed the departure of striker Eliezer Mayenda, who has joined Stade Rennais on a five-year deal. The agreement could be worth around £22 million if all add-ons are achieved.
The club said in a statement that they thanked him for his contribution and wished him success in the next chapter. Mayenda posted an emotional farewell on Saturday evening as the move neared confirmation.
He expressed delight at joining a big club long spoken about at Sochaux. He described himself as a complete forward who likes to run in behind, dribble and take on defenders, and looked forward to playing at Roazhon Park and discovering Ligue 1, which he views as underrated.
Rennes highlighted his pace and ability to stretch defences, noted he can operate wide or through the middle, and pointed to his experience across leagues and countries. They praised his exemplary mentality and expect him to settle into the squad.
The club hierarchy also noted strong competition for his signature and his determination to join, welcoming him and his family to the Rouge et Noir. In his Instagram message, Mayenda thanked chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, team-mates and staff, and told supporters Sunderland would always be part of him.
