Eliezer Mayenda, 21, is set to join Rennes from Sunderland, with the Spain Under-21 forward viewed as a high-potential signing.

According to L'Équipe, a fee between €20m and €25m has been agreed with Sunderland, with formalities due in the coming days. Betis Sevilla and Bundesliga clubs were in the mix, and Paris FC returned in recent days after targeting him last summer, but the Breton side are bringing him back to France.

Born in Zaragoza to a Congolese father and Togolese mother, he moved to the Paris region around age 10. He joined Sochaux in 2019 and, two years later, became their youngest professional at 16 years and eight months, surpassing Jérémy Ménez. He played 15 Ligue 2 games in 2022-23, then moved to Sunderland, spending six months before a loan to Hibernian, where he featured four times.

Régis Le Bris used him sparingly in the Premier League last season, giving eight starts while favouring Dutch striker Brian Brobbey. The previous year brought Sunderland’s promotion, with Mayenda scoring 10 in the Championship, including in the play-off semi-final first leg and the final, plus a solo goal against Bristol on 18 April 2025 in a 1-2 defeat after a run from his own box.

He has two goals in nine Spain Under-21 caps, where he is a mainstay, and has trained several times with the senior European champions. France courted him at 16, but he opted for his birth country after a call from Under-17 coach Julen Guerrero.
