Why Sunderland are selling Eliezer Mayenda as Stade Rennais close on £22m deal

Eliezer Mayenda’s imminent move to Stade Rennais looks a rare transfer that suits club, player and buyer, even if Sunderland’s sale is reluctant.

According to Sunderland Echo, the deal is understood to be worth around £22 million including add-ons, with Sochaux retaining a significant sell-on, which should strengthen Sunderland’s SCR position across this window and the next.

While 2025/26 did not unfold as hoped after Mayenda headed Sunderland into the lead against West Ham United on opening day, the 21-year-old remains highly regarded internally and widely respected for overcoming a difficult first year. Talks over his likely exit have been conducted respectfully.

Mayenda had begun to consider a move in the second half of last season as Brian Brobbey surged and regular starts looked scarce. Wilson Isidor also finished strongly and, in Régis Le Bris’s thinking, moved back ahead of the Spaniard. With his status unlikely to change next season, it was hard to stand in his way once top-league interest emerged.

Rennes are seen as ambitious, in the Europa League and targeting Champions League levels in time. They have tied Esteban Lepaul to improved terms, Franck Haise is expected to follow at some stage, and Haise has often used two strikers. Mayenda is set to arrive as a senior option with the responsibility he craves, while Charlie Creswell is also in advanced talks to join.

A loan was considered, but a strong offer shifts the calculus. Having signed Mayenda for just under €1 million, Sunderland bank a major profit, can reinvest, and stay compliant. Interim CEO Tom Burwell said last month the club would have to be “cute and clever” this summer, and this deal reflects that.
