Veteran midfielder suffered a suspected broken arm while celebrating beating Mexico

Jordan Henderson has spoken out for the first time after suffering a freak injury during the celebrations of England’s win over Mexico.

The veteran midfielder tripped over the advertising hoardings after the 3-2 win at the Estadio Azteca and suffered a suspected wrong arm when trying to cushion his fall.

Henderson, who had just six minutes across England’s first five games, was stretchered off the pitch, given oxygen and taken to hospital.

And 36-year-old has now thanked fans on social media for their well-wishes, and vowed to continue supporting the squad as they prepare for Saturday's World Cup quarter-final against Norway.

Henderson wrote on Instagram: “A night to remember that’s for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team.

Henderson’s injury leaves England head coach Thomas Tuchel without one of his most experienced players for the remainder of the competition.

Speaking about his team-mate’s condition, England defender Marc Guehi said: “Hendo's good. He's in a better place than he was [on Monday].

“It was obviously scary for him, his family and everyone else, but we're just glad he's on the road to a speedy recovery."

Tuchel admitted the injury had cast a shadow over England's celebrations after the victory against Mexico, confirming Henderson would play no further part in the tournament because of the seriousness of the damage.

The loss is a significant one for England, with Henderson widely regarded as one of the squad's senior leaders. Although his minutes on the pitch have been limited, his experience has been viewed as an important asset during the campaign.

Attention now turns to England's quarter-final against Norway, where Tuchel's side will attempt to reach the last four without the former Liverpool captain.
