English clubs are reportedly exploring compensation claims after Man City were found guilty of significant financial rule breaches, with an appeal expected.

According to Daily Echo, the possibility of legal action has emerged, and some rivals have sought advice on whether they could claim for financial losses, potentially beyond Premier League prize money to lost European income and other opportunities.

An independent commission ruled against City on the vast majority of Premier League charges. The league says that from 2009/10 to 2017/18 schemes were used to inflate revenues and reduce costs by more than £900 million.

In November 2024, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United and Tottenham lodged formal notices reserving the right to seek compensation.

Saints could have an interest, having spent seven seasons in the Premier League during the period. There is no suggestion they have lodged a claim or plan to, though any wider process could affect up to 35 clubs. Saints finished as high as sixth in that spell, twice qualifying for Europe, and reached the EFL Cup final in 2017.

There is recent precedent. In June this year, Burnley were awarded £35 million from Everton after the Clarets were relegated in a season Everton breached rules. Everton have appealed.

Any compensation process would be separate from City’s sporting punishment, which is yet to be determined, and could be lengthy.
