Manchester City’s 2-2 draw against AS Monaco left Erling Haaland seething during his post-match media duties on the French Riviera on Wednesday evening.
Eric Dier’s injury-time penalty goal secured a point for the hosts at the Stade Louis II as Manchester City squandered a one-goal lead right at the death after Erling Haaland’s brace within 45 minutes.
The 25-year-old maintained his hot streak in front of goal as he grabbed his 10th and 11th goals of the 2025-26 season, with defensive duo Josko Gvardiol and Nico O’Reilly setting up the Norwegian brilliantly in the first-half.
City dominated possession in Monaco and deserved the three points but Pep Guardiola’s men failed to kill the game as Tijjani Reijnders and Phil Foden both struck the crossbar in what on another might would have culminated in a comfortable win for the visitors.
Haaland – despite his individual heroics – was not pleased with his side’s performance in the second half and the Leeds-born striker, who is not known for pulling any punches, made his feelings on the Manchester City performance clear in a series of post-match interviews.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the 2-2 draw, Haaland said: “We don’t feel good. We don’t win. We did something unnecessary in the second-half and we didn’t play good enough, so we don’t deserve to win.
“We need more energy, we needed to get at them more as we did in the first-half when we dominated much more. In the second-half, they took the lead much more and I don’t think it’s good enough.”
Guardiola’s side have not lost since their 2-1 defeat to Brighton in August and whilst Manchester City have picked up what later may be viewed as a good point away in the UEFA Champions League, Haaland is certainly not looking at the silver lining as of yet.
“I’m ****** off, I think everyone should be. It’s not good enough,” the former Borussia Dortmund man said in angry fashion to BBC Match of the Day, expressing his frustration at his teammates for the second-half.
On the subject of individual scoring records in the UEFA Champions League, Haaland was not in the mental space to be thinking about anything but the result, as he added: “Right now I don’t think too much of that. I’m just, as I said, ****** off.”
Guardiola will be delighted with Haaland’s spirit and determination to hold the Manchester City squad accountable, with the Blues giving away the lead twice on the night against Monaco to take a sole point.
These are the standards that have led Manchester City to the pinnacle of English, European and global football under Guardiola, with the Blues expected to come out fighting in their Premier League meeting with Brentford on Sunday to correct the record and prove a point to their own selves after letting three points slip by on Wednesday.
