Brazil’s federal government has banned betting companies’ advertising and operations, alarming clubs sponsored by the sector such as Flamengo. Former vice-president and current federal deputy Marcos Braz has issued a fierce rebuke.

According to Coluna Do Fla, Braz, the rapporteur of the bill to regulate sports betting, called the move cowardly, ineffective and electioneering, and said it could cost him his election. He added that he had the authority to speak on the subject.

He argued the authorities had torn up pre-agreed rules, leaving Flamengo to foot the bill, and warned the measure would push millions into the black market. A sudden revenue cut, he said, would hit the academy, women’s football, Olympic sports and thousands of workers.

As vice-president, Braz oversaw Flamengo’s first master partnership with Pixbet in 2024, initially worth R$ 105 million then adjusted to R$ 115 million. That agreement was set to be the biggest master deal in Brazilian football.

In 2025 Betano replaced Pixbet as master sponsor and could pay up to R$ 895 million through 2028, keeping it among the country’s largest agreements of its kind.

The government argues betting firms destroy Brazilian families. Flamengo’s contract with Betano runs until December 2028, and the club awaits a decision on whether the provisional measure will be converted into law.

Flamengo visit Santos on eight October at 19:30 Brasília time at Vila Belmiro, then face Fluminense on eleven October at 17:30 at the Maracanã.
