Ethan Mbappé was sent off as Lille lost 2-3 to Betis Seville in the Champions League on Tuesday, leaving them with 10 men. According to L'Équipe, he will miss the next three matches and the suspension could stretch to five.

The straight red arrived in the 56th minute for a deliberate elbow to the face of Natan as the Betis centre-back moved past him near the centre circle.

Under UEFA’s disciplinary code, Article 15 paragraph 1 on improper conduct by players and officials, such an act can be classed as violent conduct or assault. That brings an automatic ban for Lille’s next Champions League game, away to Arsenal on 13 October.

After the referee’s report is reviewed, UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body may set the suspension at three matches, or a defined duration, and could raise it to five if it is deemed serious assault.

A decision is expected before the end of September, with a right of appeal for Mbappé and the club.
