Lyon will return to the Europa League in September, with the league phase draw in Monaco on Friday at 13:00. According to Le Progres, their UEFA coefficient places them in pot one.

They lost 2-1 to Fenerbahçe in Décines on Wednesday, after a 1-1 draw in Türkiye in the first leg, so missed the Champions League league phase. This will be their fourth Europa League campaign in five years.

In pot one, they will be alongside Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus, AC Milan and Olympique de Marseille, with Benfica included if they qualify on Thursday.

Clubs from the same country cannot meet, and no team can face two clubs from one nation. Each side will play two opponents from each of the four nine-team pots.

Lyon could potentially face Pierre Sage’s English side, Crystal Palace, or last season’s conquerors, Celta Vigo. Como, the Italian club where Maxence Caqueret plays, could also lie in their path.

The opening round is 16 and 17 September, the last is 28 January. The top eight reach the last 16, teams 9 to 24 enter play-offs, 25 to 36 are eliminated. Final pots will be confirmed on Thursday night after the 12 remaining play-off second legs, with a computer assisting the draw to avoid impossible ties.
