Sunderland are bound for Europe after sealing a Europa League place with a final-day win over Chelsea, and key dates are now set. According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland and Bournemouth enter the league phase directly while Brighton must qualify for the Conference League.

The 2-1 victory at the Stadium of Light clinched seventh and came one year to the day since the late Wembley winner against Sheffield United. Players and staff are now on a well-earned summer break.

In the new format, clubs are seeded into four pots by coefficient. Each side faces two opponents from each pot, one home and one away, guaranteeing eight games, four at home and four away. After eight gameweeks the top eight progress straight to the last 16, the bottom eight go out, and teams in 16th to 24th enter a two-legged knockout round.

The league-phase draw is on Friday, 28 August 2026. Matchdays are 16 and 17 September, 15 and 22 October, 5 and 26 November, 10 December, then 21 and 28 January 2027. The final will be at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt on 26 May 2027.

Regis Le Bris said Sunderland need to stay humble ahead of a demanding schedule. He felt the club’s structure is strong and improving, but he did not want to set limits for next season.

He added that the priority is to be strong in the Premier League, acknowledging the second season is hard, and that Europa League represents a new challenge and chapter. He said it is early to anticipate summer developments, though he believes the club are well aligned.
