Everson shines, makes history and sends Galo through

Everson enjoyed yet another special night in the Galo shirt. In the qualification for the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals against Red Bull Bragantino, the goalkeeper was one of the main reasons behind the 2-2 draw at Arena MRV, a result that secured Atlético’s place with a 3-2 aggregate score.

Wearing number 22, he made seven saves during the match and came up again at the most crucial moment. In the 51st minute of the second half, Isidro Pitta redirected the ball inside the six-yard box, but Everson produced a great save and prevented the goal that would have taken the tie to penalties.

The performance earned him a 9.5 rating on Sofascore, matching the score he received in the first leg, when he also made seven saves. Across both matches against Bragantino, the goalkeeper totaled 14 saves and was crucial to Galo’s qualification.

Historic milestone

The night was also special for another reason. With this Wednesday’s match, Everson reached 391 appearances for Atlético and now stands alone as the 13th player to have worn the Galo shirt the most times, surpassing center-back Léo Silva, one of the biggest idols in the club’s recent history.

The milestone places the goalkeeper alongside important names in Atlético’s history and reinforces the scale of the journey he has built since arriving at Galo.

After the match, Everson spoke about what it means to reach yet another milestone with the club.

“First of all, I’m happy to become the 13th player to have worn this shirt the most. Thirteen is Galo, right? So, on a special night where I was able to help the team qualify, I was also able to improve my numbers a little among so many great idols Galo has had.”

The goalkeeper said he never imagined he would build such a remarkable story in the black-and-white shirt.

“Not even in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would have such a beautiful story, such a great one, as the one I’ve been writing at Galo. So I’m very happy. I’m definitely still hungry and eager to keep working even harder so that I can automatically help the team collectively and, consequently, improve my individual numbers.”

Everson also highlighted what he considers most important in leaving his mark at the club.

“Without a doubt, what defines Atlético in the club’s history is titles, good performances, and these meaningful numbers that I’ve been achieving here with Galo.”

Decisive in both matches

The performance at Arena MRV was not an isolated case. In the first leg, in Bragança Paulista, Everson also played a key role in the 1-0 win.

On that occasion, the goalkeeper made seven saves and finished the match with a 100% save rate on shots on target, playing an important part in Atlético taking the advantage back to Belo Horizonte.

In the return leg, he repeated the number of saves and once again came up big during the opponent’s moments of greatest pressure. Galo’s qualification, therefore, had the goalkeeper’s direct influence on both sides of the tie.
