Sir Alex Ferguson retired in May 2013 having just won a 13th Premier League title. In the 13 years since, 11 men have taken charge across 12 spells, and seven trophies have followed. Michael Carrick is the latest to hold the job, and after he lifted United from sixth to third last season, the Man United vs Tottenham odds read like a contest again rather than a formality. David Moyes: 10 months, one Community Shield

Moyes was Ferguson’s own recommendation and signed a six-year contract. He lasted 10 months, sacked on 22 April 2014 after 51 games in charge. He beat Wigan 2-0 in the Community Shield on 11 August 2013, then took United to seventh, their lowest Premier League finish at that point, and out of European football altogether. Ryan Giggs handled the final four games as caretaker.

Louis van Gaal: two years, one FA Cup

Van Gaal arrived in July 2014 and managed 103 games. He won the FA Cup on 21 May 2016, beating Crystal Palace 2-1 after extra time, and was sacked two days later. Fourth- and fifth-placed league finishes had already settled the argument before the cup run.

Jose Mourinho: the most decorated of them

Mourinho is still the most successful post-Ferguson appointment. Between May 2016 and his sacking on 18 December 2018, he won the 2016 Community Shield, the 2016-17 EFL Cup, beating Southampton 3-2, and the 2016-17 Europa League, beating Ajax 2-0 in Stockholm. His second season ended in a runners-up finish behind Manchester City, one of only two times United have finished second since Ferguson.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: 168 games, no silverware

Solskjaer took over as caretaker on 19 December 2018 and was made permanent on 28 March 2019. He managed 168 games, more than anyone else on this list, took United to second in 2020-21 and won nothing. The closest he came was the 2021 Europa League final, lost 11-10 on penalties to Villarreal after a 1-1 draw. He was sacked on 21 November 2021, and Michael Carrick took the next three games as caretaker without losing.

Ralf Rangnick: interim in name and in practice

Rangnick was hired in December 2021 as interim manager until the end of the season, with a two-year consultancy to follow that never materialised. His 29 games produced sixth place and 58 points, at the time United’s lowest total in a Premier League season.

Erik ten Hag: two cups and a sacking

Ten Hag won more than anyone since Mourinho. He beat Newcastle 2-0 in the 2023 EFL Cup final and Manchester City 2-1 in the 2024 FA Cup final. He also oversaw an eighth-place league finish in 2023-24, a new Premier League low for the club, and was sacked on 28 October 2024 after 128 games. Ruud van Nistelrooy took four games as caretaker and won three of them.

Ruben Amorim: 14 months, nothing to show

Amorim took charge on 11 November 2024 and won 24 of his 63 games, a rate of 38.1%. He lost the 2025 Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham in Bilbao and finished 15th in the Premier League, United’s worst season since 1973-74. He was sacked on 5 January 2026, with the club sixth, and academy coach Darren Fletcher took two games as interim head coach.

Michael Carrick: the current answer

Carrick returned on 13 January 2026, initially until the end of the season, and was handed a two-year contract on 22 May 2026. He had won 11 of his first 16 games by that point, with wins over City and Liverpool along the way, and finished third on 71 points to put United back in the Champions League.
