Former Brazil international Oscar has revealed that he came remarkably close to becoming a Barcelona player, lifting the lid on a transfer that almost materialised during one of the most challenging financial periods in the club’s recent history.

The retired attacking midfielder, who brought his playing career to an end in 2025, admitted that Barcelona made a genuine attempt to sign him during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the club struggling to strengthen the squad because of financial restrictions, the Catalan giants explored a short-term solution that would have brought the former Chelsea star back to European football.

Although the move never crossed the finish line, Oscar’s account offers a fascinating insight into Barcelona’s transfer strategy at a time when the club were forced to think creatively in the market.

Barcelona’s offer almost became reality

Reflecting on the negotiations on The Obi One Podcast, hosted by his former Chelsea teammate John Obi Mikel, Oscar revealed that Barcelona approached him with an unusual proposal designed to help the club through a difficult period.

“In the past, I received a serious offer from Barcelona!

“When the pandemic began, Barcelona were having trouble signing new players, so they got in touch with me.”

Rather than committing to a long-term contract immediately, Barcelona wanted Oscar to provide experience and quality while allowing both sides to reassess the situation once the short-term agreement expired.

“They offered me a contract for about six months and a modest salary.

“They told me: ‘Come here, stay with us and help us out, and then you can decide whether you want to stay here or go back to China.’”

Umtiti’s situation prevented the Barcelona transfer

Oscar also explained why the deal ultimately fell apart despite progressing to an advanced stage.

According to the former Brazil midfielder, Barcelona first needed to free up space in the squad before completing his arrival.

“I was waiting because they needed to let one of their players go before I could join.”

However, the failure to move Samuel Umtiti on meant Barcelona were unable to finalise the deal, bringing an end to a transfer that had appeared increasingly likely behind the scenes.

“It was very close, but that player – I think he was one of the defenders, Umtiti I believe – didn’t leave because he couldn’t find a club to move to.

“In the end I didn’t go, but it was very close. I was very close. I think Xavi was the manager at the time,” he concluded.
