Ricardo Santos' proposed move to the SCL Stadium is OFF

Reading FC made their first foray into the winter transfer market this week with the loan signing of Preston North End striker Will Keane - but their attempts to add a second player to their ranks in quick succession has hit a stumbling block, Football League World can exclusively reveal.

The Royals have been on a hot streak in League One since mid-December, winning four of their last five matches under new manager Leam Richardson to propel themselves up to ninth in the table, but fresh faces have been sought to try and give the Berkshire outfit an even further competitive edge in the final few months of the campaign.

Richardson has re-united with Republic of Ireland international attacker Keane following their successful spell together at Wigan Athletic, but a move for an experienced League One defender no longer looks to be going ahead.

Reading FC deal for Ricardo Santos collapses for one reason

FLW can exclusively reveal that Swansea City's Ricardo Santos has failed a medical with Reading, which has scuppered his planned permanent move to the SLC Stadium.

As also revealed by FLW earlier in the week, the Royals had agreed a fee with the South Wales club for Santos' services, having only signed for the Swans in the summer when his Bolton Wanderers contract expired.

The 30-year-old has played just once for Swansea, which came in the form of a substitute appearance against Bristol City in November, but injuries for the most part have kept the Cape Verde international on the sidelines, with that being somewhat of a running theme in recent years.

And that has perhaps led to the new development, with FLW understanding that after undergoing the medical procedure with Reading, the deal is now off after the examinations were failed.

It will come as somewhat of a blow to in-form Reading, who were hoping to land Santos to bolster their defensive options, with Derrick Williams recently going down with an injury.

With nearly 200 third tier appearances to his name from spells at Peterborough United and Bolton, Santos would have provided a wealth of experience for Richardson as he aims to guide Reading to promotion, but they will now have to move on to alternative targets thanks to this setback.
