Liverpool Transfer News: Doors Could Open to Cody Gakpo Sale

It was a disappointing campaign for Liverpool last year, finishing fifth in a disastrous title defence. Many players came under scrutiny, but perhaps none more so than Cody Gakpo.

The 27-year-old was massively frustrating, despite registering nine goals and six assists across all competitions. By the end of the season, fans felt that he had fallen behind teenager Rio Ngumoha in the left-wing pecking order.

Gakpo did look back to his old self for the Netherlands in the World Cup, where he scored three goals and grabbed one assist in four games on the biggest stage.

However, he could still be heading for the exit door as Liverpool continue to rebuild their attacking department following the exit of Mohamed Salah.

Fabrizio Romano’s Update

Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are at the very front of the queue, should Gakpo leave Liverpool this summer.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano provided this update: “Tottenham Hotspur are not only working on a deal for Savinho, because they want two wingers.”

“Cody Gakpo is another top priority. De Zerbi wants two wingers; Savinho and Gakpo. If one of these deals can’t happen, they have alternatives like Pedro Neto.”

“Obviously for Cody Gakpo, it depends if Liverpool open the doors or not. In this case, the Barcola story could be important.”

Liverpool are expected to demand a transfer fee of around £70m for the Dutchman. Based on his performances over the past year and his age, it could be the final chance to receive serious money for the player.

As Romano rightly points out though, any exit would only even be considered if/when Liverpool get the arrival of Bradley Barcola over the line.

The Reds are in active talks with PSG to reach an agreement, whilst personal terms have already been agreed.

With just two weeks remaining in the transfer window, it is going to be incredibly busy as Andoni Iraola looks to strengthen his squad before his debut campaign.
