Liverpool could yet be forced to pursue an alternative target to Aurelien Tchouameni after Fabrizio Romano confirmed the Frenchman’s priority is a transfer to Real Madrid.
The Merseysiders and the Spanish outfit were thought to be the frontrunners for the 22-year-old’s signature this summer, though it would seem that a switch to Anfield will be dependent first on Los Blancos’ inability to complete the move.
“Aurelien Tchouameni told his teammates that his priority this summer is Real Madrid. Even sources inside Liverpool are sure that Tchouameni wants to give priority to negotiations with Real Madrid,” the Italian told Caught Offside.
“There have been ongoing talks between Real Madrid and his agents for a contract until June 2027, but not yet a full deal with AS Monaco asking €80m for the midfielder: new talks are expected right after the Champions League final this weekend.
“Paris Saint-Germain remain interested until the end, but Real Madrid are leading the race. Liverpool remain alert to the situation before focusing on other targets.
“As I wrote in my recent column, the Reds have held direct talks with Tchouameni’s agent as well, but it seems he has now made it clear that his preference is to move to the Spanish capital.”
Jurgen Klopp’s men are said to be tracking potential midfield additions to the squad in the upcoming window with Ibrahim Sangare, of PSV, strongly linked.
Priced between £50-66m, according to the Empire of the Kop’s sources, the Monaco star would be potentially more than double the asking price of the Eredivisie-dwelling Ivorian.
Whilst there will be a temptation among some fans to throw their arms about in frustration, it should be remembered that our second choices have historically worked out rather well.
A figure closer to £21m would be far easier to offset with potential outgoings too, leaving the club wiggle room to negotiate larger fees, if necessary, for other key targets.
