FC Lorient unveiled the «Mur des Merlus» on Sunday as part of its centenary, ahead of the Ligue 1 meeting with Auxerre at 17:15 in the 24th round.

According to L'Équipe, the mural features 56 influential figures from the club’s history, with several attending the ceremony.

A notable absentee was Christian Gourcuff, 70, a former player from 1982 to 1986 and coach in that spell, then from 1991 to 2001 and from 2003 to 2014.

Installed on a wall of the Grand Théâtre de Lorient, beside the Stade du Moustoir, the piece measures 13 metres long and 2.60 metres high. It salutes the people who have shaped the club since 1926.

Supporters were invited in 2025 to nominate their 30 favourite figures, a shortlist that formed the basis for the final selection after robust discussions.

Former coach Yvon Pouliquen, who led Lorient to the Coupe de France in 2002, expressed his pride and called that triumph unforgettable and especially meaningful for a club like Lorient. He noted it has become difficult in recent years for a small club to win the competition, and said he hopes for a Lorient-Strasbourg final this year, having also won the cup with Strasbourg in 2001.
