FC Porto sign Chris Smalling on deal to season’s end with option | OneFootball

FC Porto have signed England international defender Chris Smalling, 36, until the end of the season, with an option for a further year. The club said in a statement that the extension can be triggered if sporting targets are met. He joins the national champions on a free transfer.

Smalling arrives after leaving Al Fayha of Saudi Arabia at the end of last season. His career has also included spells with Roma and Manchester United.

Smalling felt strongly wanted by the head coach and the club, which he believes worked hard to bring him in.

After the head coach outlined how he saw his fit and what he could contribute, having studied his recent matches, Smalling was encouraged.

A 10-minute conversation was enough for him to feel the move had to happen.
