Grêmio, in crisis after sacking Luís Castro and close to the relegation zone, will have Felipão and Renato together on the bench against Botafogo at Nilton Santos on Wednesday.
Felipão leads as planned, and Renato will also be pitchside as assistant to the technical coordinator who ran Monday and Tuesday, according to Globo.com.
Renato joined the squad at their Rio hotel on Tuesday, is registered in the CBF’s BID and can be on the touchline. Felipão last coached in 2024 with Atlético-MG.
The club believes Felipão can brief Renato and anticipate issues. He is the senior figure in a football department reshaped in December after Odorico Roman’s election.
Scolari returned in April 2025 when president Alberto Guerra brought him back with Mano Menezes after Gustavo Quinteros. Since then he has focused mainly on the academy.
He followed the 2025 squad build and backed promotions for several youngsters now in the group.
His role broadened under Mano, including post match talks and input on signings, but narrowed to player development under Castro.
Renato’s arrival is expected to reconnect Scolari with the first team in the early weeks. The pair are Grêmio greats, with landmark trophies in 1994, 1995, 1996, 2016 and 2017.
Renato leads the club’s coaches with 543 official games across five spells. Felipão, also in his fifth stint tonight, is second with 385.
