Hugo Souza remains Corinthians’ undisputed first choice, but the identity of his immediate back-up is still unsettled.

According to Globo.com, the current view inside the club is that it is Kauê’s moment in the contest to be Hugo Souza’s deputy.

Felipe Longo’s elbow injury sidelined him for about 40 days between February and April. During that period, Kauê was chosen to deputise when Hugo Souza could not play.

Last year, however, Longo featured during Hugo Souza’s absences and enjoyed good moments under Dorival Júnior. He also has Brazil under-20 call-ups.

At 22, Kauê stands out for his work with the ball at his feet, a trait Fernando Diniz values. He is regarded as strong-willed and ready for the pressure of big matches.

There are regular conversations at the club to ensure any over-exuberance is kept in check so it does not harm the team. With Longo fully recovered for the interseason period, the battle to be number two could yet evolve.
