"2028 or 2029," said Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro when pressed on when the club might win the title again.
"Yes," he said when asked if Leverkusen can lift the Bundesliga once more, speaking to Bild.
"It hurts me that Bayern are dominating the league so much. Of course, they have three times our budget, but they’ve done a lot of good work over the years. Nevertheless, you have to try to give them a hard time. We managed to do that in 2024."
Leverkusen are the most recent Bundesliga winners not named Bayern Munich, after their unprecedented unbeaten season and 2024 title under Xabi Alonso.
Since then there has been a significant player exodus and the departure of Alonso, leaving this season as a transitional campaign. Bayern have won the past two league titles, with this season all but confirmed.
Leverkusen have shown flashes this season, including a 2-0 win away to Manchester City, but they remain short of consistently competing at the Bundesliga summit.
