Fernando Diniz was sacked by Vasco on Sunday night after a 1-0 defeat to Fluminense at Estádio Nilton Santos in the Campeonato Carioca semi-final.
The head coach did not face the media. According to Globo.com, president Pedrinho, alongside director of football Admar Lopes, announced his departure and said Bruno Lazaroni will take interim charge until a new head coach arrives.
Pedrinho thanked Diniz for accepting the role in a difficult period and praised his effort and dedication. He also thanked Coutinho for his commitment to joining and the respect he has shown the club.
Assistants Ricardo Cobalchini and Evandro Fornari, and fitness coach Wagner Bertelli, also leave.
Across his second spell, Diniz oversaw 56 matches, returning 17 wins, 16 draws and 23 defeats.
He returned in March 2025 with Vasco at risk of relegation in the Brasileirão. The team put together a winning run and even eyed a Conmebol Libertadores place, but league form stalled late in the season. Vasco also finished runners-up in the Copa do Brasil.
