Manchester City are ‘likely to swoop in’ to sign Argentina Under-20 sensation Maher Carrizo, according to new reports from the Netherlands.
The forward came through the ranks of Velez Sarsfield’s youth system and is still part of the side making considerable progress since breaking into the first team two years ago. Operating mainly as a winger and impressing in that role, Carrizo has scored 10 goals and contributed with an assist from 35 matches, since extending his contract until December 2027.
Carrizo is liked by many clubs across the globe and nearly joined River Plate, reaching an agreement before the move ultimately collapsed, and the 19-year-old is now also wanted by Eredivisie club Feyenoord.
In July, Soy del Millo reported that Pep Guardiola’s side held a desire to exercise the youngster’s €16 million release clause, but never made an approach in the summer market for the player.
Now, according to Soccer News – as translated and relayed by Sport Witness – City are back in the mix to sign the attacker and hold high ground on Feyenoord, with journalist Mounir Boualin claiming the Premier League side made advances much earlier.
“I heard he’s in advanced negotiations with Manchester City. Yes, and as Feyenoord, you can’t compete with that,” he said, although Boualin did not specify whether City would approach in the ongoing January window or the following summer market.
Soccer News also stated that Velez Sarsfield have decided to sell Carrizo to a European club and are ‘willing to sell’ to Pep Guardiola’s side, whose stature as one of the most successful clubs in the modern era provides matchless pull.
City’s attack is arguably the strongest it has been in recent seasons, and perhaps since the 2023 Treble-winning year. The addition of Antoine Semenyo, who scored twice in his first two games, has already shown signs of reward after City triggered a £65 million release clause.
To complement the now-former Bournemouth man, Jeremy Doku has also found fine form once again after a muscle injury that kept him out of action for five games over the new year period.
Should Maher Carrizo move to England, his role in the Manchester City first team may not be of much importance until he progresses further under the eye of the City Football Group, with the most likely move being a loan deal elsewhere for the time being.
