First the league then the cup – away at St. Pölten

Against the second-tier side on Sunday

Let's think back to 18 May 2014 – when our boys were the newly crowned cup champions after a 4-2 win over SKN St. Pölten in the final. This coming Sunday, twelve years later, the two teams meet again, this time in the second round. At the NV Arena, our boys aim to secure their place in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup Round of 16. Referee Alain Sadikovski will kick off the match at 17:00 CEST.

This final at the Wörthersee Stadium in Klagenfurt marked the beginning of a one-sided run. Ultimately, 18 more encounters, both in the cup and in the Bundesliga, would follow, with virtually always the same outcome: 16 wins, two draws, and an overall goal difference of 67-12 – such is the impressive record from our perspective. We have to be cautious though, as the Lower Austrians became real giant-killers in the cup during this period. Since their encounter in Carinthia, they have reached at least the round of 16 eight times in a row.

Back to the present - the start to the season has been somewhat sluggish for St. Pölten captain Marc Stendera and his team-mates. Just a week ago the promotion contenders and last season's #LigaZwa runners-up finally secured their first points with a 1-0 win against SV Austria Salzburg. Before that, they had suffered four consecutive 1-0 defeats.

The match will be broadcast on ORF 1 as part of a three-match conference and in its entirety on ORF ON and ÖFB TV. The draw for the round of 16 will take place after this conference, with Herbert Prohaska conducting the draw.

Views

We've been working together daily for several weeks now, and you can see that the team is implementing our game plan better and better on the pitch. In the cup, however, every round is about advancing and playing with utmost seriousness and consistency. St. Pölten will give it their all in front of their home crowd to make life difficult for us. Therefore, we need the right attitude from the start, a lot of intensity, and the willingness to take on this challenge with complete conviction.

What's said beforehand is one thing. What awaits us on Sunday in St. Pölten is something else entirely. We will certainly be facing opponents who will do everything to win and want to knock us, the favorites, out of the competition. We have to be prepared for that, and we will do everything in our power to prevent it. We will prepare as professionally and with as much focus as possible.
