Real Madrid have spent some of the biggest transfer fees in football history, but not all of those investments have been reserved for attacking superstars.

Over the years, Los Blancos have also paid significant sums to strengthen their defence, bringing in players expected to lead the club on both domestic and European stages.

The list features a mix of club legends, Champions League winners and promising young talents.

Some justified their hefty price tags and became icons at the Santiago Bernabeu, while others struggled to live up to expectations.

With Marc Cucurella joining the team from Chelsea this summer for €55 million plus another €5 million in add-ons, it is the perfect time to look back at the five most costly defensive signings ever made by the Spanish giants.

Dean Huijsen – €63 million

Dean Huijsen currently sits at the top of the list as the most expensive defender Real Madrid have ever signed.

The Spanish international arrived with a transfer fee of €63 million from Bournemouth and immediately became one of the most talked-about young defenders in Europe.

At just 21 years of age, the pressure attached to the move is enormous, especially at a club where every signing is expected to perform from day one.

What convinced Real Madrid to invest such a substantial amount was Huijsen’s rare combination of physical presence and technical quality.

Comfortable bringing the ball out from the back, dominant in aerial duels and mature beyond his years, he possesses many of the qualities required to become a long-term leader in defence.

Although his debut season did not go as promised, the room for improvement is massive for the Spaniard.

Marc Cucurella – €55 million

Cucurella’s arrival this summer shows how valuable elite full-backs have become in modern football.

Real Madrid agreed to pay €55 million upfront for the Spain international, with performance-related bonuses potentially taking the deal to €60 million.

The fee places him second on this ranking and explains the club’s determination to strengthen the left side of the defence.

Unlike traditional full-backs, Cucurella offers much more than defensive security. His energy, tactical flexibility and ability to contribute in possession make him a perfect fit for the modern game.

He can operate as a full-back, wing-back or even in a more advanced role when required.

Currently, the Los Blancos have as many as four left-backs in the roster, meaning that exits are a certainty this summer.

Eder Militao – €50 million

If success is used as the main measure of a transfer, few defensive signings have delivered as much value as Eder Militao.

The Brazilian joined Real Madrid from Porto for €50 million and gradually developed into one of the club’s most reliable defenders.

His rise coincided with a period of transition at the Santiago Bernabeu, where he was tasked with helping replace some of the most iconic defenders in the club’s history.

Looking back, his transfer fee appears remarkably reasonable considering the impact he has had.

Simply put, in today’s market, securing a defender of his quality for €50 million would be considered an excellent piece of business.

Alvaro Carreras – €50 million

Alvaro Carreras represents Real Madrid’s increasingly aggressive strategy of investing in young talent before their value skyrockets.

The Spanish defender arrived for €50 million from Benfica last summer with a reputation as one of the brightest prospects in his position.

When Real Madrid invested in the Spaniard, the club believed Carreras possessed all the attributes needed to become a long-term fixture in the first team.

The former Benfica man started the 2025/26 season on a high note, but the second half of the season was rather forgetful, with the defender falling out of favour under former manager Alvaro Arbeloa.

Right now, with Cucurella arriving, Carreras’ position is far from certain a mere year after signing for Los Blancos.

Ferland Mendy – €48 million

Ferland Mendy may not have generated as many headlines as some of the other names on this list, but his contribution to Real Madrid’s success should not be underestimated.

Signed for €48 million from Lyon in 2019, the Frenchman established himself as one of the most dependable defensive full-backs in European football.

While many modern defenders are judged primarily by their attacking numbers, Mendy earned his reputation through consistency, defensive discipline and reliability.

Time and again, he delivered strong performances against elite opposition, often neutralising some of the world’s most dangerous wingers.

Over the past few seasons, however, the Frenchman has struggled for fitness, which was one of the reasons why Real Madrid invested in Fran Garcia and Carreras in the first place.
