Five Reasons Xabi Alonso is the Right Choice for Chelsea

On Sunday morning Chelsea FC announced the signing of Xabi Alonso as their new manager. The former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid coach will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed a four‑year contract at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are having a difficult season after losing Enzo Maresca in January, and his replacement, Liam Rosenior, was sacked in April after a series of poor results. However, a lot of fans were skeptical about the quality of any coach who would accept the dreaded Chelsea job.

Those fears disappeared when Chelsea announced Xavi Alonso’s arrival and the Spaniard was adamant that Chelsea is still a big club and worth signing for.

“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club”, he said. “From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.

“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honor to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies,” he told Chelsea website.

Executive Support

Notably, Xabi Alonso carries the tag of “manager” instead of “head coach.” This is a departure from the titles BlueCo has bestowed on his predecessors.

Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali revealed in an interview a few weeks ago that the club would look to tweak the model regarding coaches. “The objective is to keep your best players, and we’ve done that, and there’s no intention to rebuild every three or four years. You tweak a model, you improve, you learn from mistakes,” he said.

“I think, generally, we’ve been fortunate, not in getting everything right, but we do have a core (of) good players, global players: Cole Palmer, Moisés Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, Levi Colwill, Estêvão Willian, Reece James.”

As manager (and not head coach), Xabi Alonso is reportedly set to enjoy more authority than others before him. He should have more input on signings and in the overall running of the football side of the club.

Five Things Xabi Alonso Will Bring to Chelsea

1. Tactical Identity

Alonso is known for switching systems depending on the opponent and available players. While known for employing a three-at-the-back system at Bayer Leverkusen, in the historic first season where the club went undefeated in league play, Alonso used a variety of formations.

At Real Madrid, he used mostly a back four. That flexibility could suit Chelsea’s squad because they already have players comfortable in multiple roles.

It’s also worth noting that Alonso’s formations are very dynamic and flexible, which makes his teams unpredictable irrespective of their starting formation.

2. Positional Structure

Chelsea have often looked chaotic in attack in recent games. Against Manchester City in the FA Cup defeat, they played a good game but lack decisive movements and final balls in attack.

Xabi Alonso’s teams usually have clearly defined attacking structures and patterns. That identity consists of wing-backs holding widths and creative midfielders having positional clarity that makes their movement and passing look well rehearsed.

3. Discipline

Lack of discipline has been one of Chelsea’s biggest issues this season. They have the most red cards (7) and the third-most yellow cards (82) in the Premier League this season.

There has been indiscipline off the pitch as well. Recently, during the last international break, Enzo Fernández and Marc Cucurella openly criticized the club in the media, which led to Fernández being punished with a two-game ban.

There was also widespread criticisms of the players not giving their all during the poor run under previous head coach Liam Rosenior.

Xabi Alonso is different. As a player with Spain, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid he won: the Champions League, the World Cup and the Euros. As a manager he won the Bundesliga with an unfancied Leverkusen side, losing only a single game in all competitions over the 2023/24 season. His CV and personality will surely command the respect of the Chelsea squad.

4. Player Development

Alonso started his coaching career in Real Sociedad youth team before moving to Bayer Leverkusen, where he was tasked with improving a young squad. Young players like Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, and established players like Jonathan Tah, Alejandro Grimaldo and Granit Xhaka, all played the best soccer of their careers under him.

Xabi Alonso revealed to the Players Tribune how he got the best out of Wirtz: “I only have to support the talent, and I only need to create players that will help him shine and to show that talent, because if you don’t provide that sustainability, that talent won’t be consistent.”

He has deep knowledge of the game and understands how to structure his team to suit the profile of his squad and get the best out of each individual.

5. Consistent tactical Intelligence

When you go unbeaten in any league, it means you answered every question asked of you throughout the season. Leverkusen frequently came up from behind after tactical shifts and substitutions to win a lot of games.

Alonso knows from experience what a side has to do to be consistent over a season. The players will look up to him for clues and guidance. As a young squad, Chelsea has been extremely inconsistent since BlueCo took over ownership.

To help stabilize the dressing room, it’s rumored that Chelsea have decided to sign 3-4 experienced players onto the team.

The Right Choice

I personally believe that Xabi Alonso will likely be successful at Chelsea because his tactical intelligence, calm leadership, and ability to develop young players perfectly match the club’s current direction.

His teams play organized, modern football with strong midfield control, quick transitions, and clear attacking patterns. With Chelsea already having talented young stars like Cole Palmer, Moisés Caicedo, and Romeo Lavia, Alonso’s coaching style could unlock their full potential.
