Flamengo also occupy second place in the season’s rankings, with the 1-1 group-stage draw at Estudiantes in Argentina pulling 29 points.

The tie set a crowd mark too, as Cruzeiro recorded their biggest attendance of the year at Mineirão, with 60,046 present for the 1-1 last-16 meeting.

Kenny Arroyo scored for Cruzeiro, Lucas Paquetá replied for Flamengo. If the return leg ends level, the quarter-final place will be decided on penalties.

Before facing Cruzeiro again, Flamengo play Mirassol on Sunday 16 in Brasileirão round 23, kicking off at 18:30 Brasília time at Estádio José Maria de Campos Maia, the Maião.
