Palmeiras have surrendered top spot in the Brasileirão after a 0-0 draw at Botafogo, with Flamengo moving first on 54 points to the Verdão's 53. According to Nosso Palestra, the result leaves Abel Ferreira's side only ninth in the returno standings.
Palmeiras had led for 19 rounds, a sequence that began in round seven. Flamengo seized the summit with a 1-0 win over Remo.
The contrast to their first half is stark. Palmeiras posted 44 points from the opening 19 matches, a 77% return that secured the symbolic first-turn title.
In the returno they have struggled for consistency. They sit ninth on nine points, trailing Cruzeiro, Flamengo, Bahia, Fluminense, Athletico-PR, Santos, Atlético-MG and Coritiba. Cruzeiro lead this split with 15 points, Flamengo are second on 14.
Their returno opened with a 3-1 win at Coritiba, then defeats to Atlético-MG and Fluminense. They have also dropped points against Internacional, Mirassol and Botafogo, underlining the need to rediscover their first-turn level to reassert themselves in the title race.
