Florent Ghisolfi must decide whether Jenson Seelt fits Sunderland’s plans as budgeting, squad depth and Europa League registration collide. The call balances talent against availability and value.

According to Sunderland Echo, Seelt, 23, offers size, mobility and cover at centre-back and right-back, yet those roles are already crowded. Dan Ballard, Nordi Mukiele, Luke O’Nien and Trai Hume are in place, with Lutsharel Geertruida a possible returnee, and European homegrown limits will shape selections.

He joined from PSV in 2023 on a five-year deal, seen as a long-term project with resale upside, but injuries stalled him. He has 95 senior games, 63 for Jong PSV, and only 18 Championship outings across two seasons after a serious knee injury at Southampton in March 2024, requiring surgery and a six to nine-month recovery.

He featured in the first two Premier League matches last season and looked steady before a loan to Wolfsburg. Another right knee issue in January 2026 curtailed that spell, restricting him to nine games and bringing him back this summer to continue rehabilitation.

Accounting matters, as any sale would be measured against his remaining book value, with PSR and SCR calculations sensitive to fees and wages. More fixtures in Europe could justify defensive depth, but a European squad of around 22 or 23 seniors might still squeeze fringe players. Ghisolfi’s options are to keep faith, sell to trim costs, or seek a loan to rebuild rhythm and protect value.
