Florent Ghisolfi must decide whether to reintegrate Jenson Seelt or move him on as Sunderland weigh squad balance, finances and Europa League registration.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 23-year-old Dutchman has clear talent and can cover centre-back and right-back, yet competition is heavy with Dan Ballard, Nordi Mukiele, Luke O’Nien and Trai Hume already available, and Lutsharel Geertruida potentially returning.

Seelt joined from PSV in 2023 on a five-year deal but availability has stalled progress. He managed 18 Championship appearances across two seasons after serious knee damage against Southampton in March 2024, surgery bringing a six to nine-month lay-off. He featured in the first two Premier League games last season, then a Wolfsburg loan yielded nine outings before a right-knee issue in January 2026 and a summer return to continue rehabilitation.

Any decision carries accounting consequences. With years left on his deal there is still book value, so a sale would be judged against that, affecting PSR/SCR room. One departure will not transform the budget, though wages and a modest fee could still help.

Extra European fixtures strengthen the case for depth, but homegrown limits could cap the squad at around 22 or 23, squeezing fringe options. If Seelt is not registered or trusted for minutes, sporadic use would serve nobody.

The pathways are clear, keep him and back his upside, sell to bank savings, or arrange a loan to rebuild rhythm and value. Timing, price and risk will decide which route Ghisolfi takes.
