Anthony Patterson is back on Wearside for the 2026/27 build-up, but his future is unresolved as Sunderland weigh the right terms for a likely exit.
Sunderland Echo reports that reclaiming the number one shirt looks remote, with Robin Roefs established and Melker Ellborg signed in January as his replacement, recognising Patterson needs regular football.
A summer move is widely expected, yet there is no firm resolution while Sunderland seek terms that reflect his ability. At 26, the homegrown goalkeeper has nearly 200 appearances across five seasons, regularly among the EFL’s better performers for save percentage.
There is also a significant SCR consideration. As with the old PSR rules, academy sales count as pure profit, now averaged across three years, which could create headroom if Sunderland’s valuation is met. With Ellborg already in place on low amortisation after a modest fee, the club hold a strong hand.
Most suitors are Championship clubs given his limited top-tier experience, and willingness to pay a major fee is uncertain. A loan suited January’s Millwall switch to protect value, but with two years left it is now far less attractive. Alternatives include a loan with an obligation on promotion, or a smaller fee plus sizeable add-ons.
Patterson is thought to prefer a permanent move so he can settle and kick on. That would suit Sunderland too, though pragmatism may be needed and patience required while clubs create room to near the valuation.
