Florian Wirtz delivered a superb display as Germany secured a 2-0 win over Serbia in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday giving Jurgen Klopp his first victory as Germany head coach.

Wirtz played a key role in the opening goal, striking the woodwork before the rebound fell to Tom Bischof, who drilled the ball into the roof of the net.

The 23-year-old sealed the victory in the second half, firing the ball into the bottom corner after a brilliant team move.

The performance will have caught the attention of Liverpool fans, with Wirtz struggling to find consistency since joining the club from Bayer Leverkusen.

Wirtz offered an insight into his outstanding display against Serbia, potentially giving a hint at how he can improve at Liverpool.

“It was incredibly fun. Every single player gave their all on the pitch. We stuck to the game plan and did almost everything right,” he told the media after the match.

“The players around me made it easy. We had a lot of movement in midfield. We were all really up for it.”

Wirtz’s comments could offer Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola an insight into how to get the best out of the German midfielder.

However, his struggles at Liverpool cannot simply be attributed to the movement around him. He also often drops deep into the midfield, preventing him from being decisive in the attacking third.

He has also struggled with the Premier League’s physicality, making it easier for opponents to dispossess him. No Liverpool player is losing more possession per league game than he is this season.

Iraola has continued to back Wirtz, but the Germany international must find consistency to keep his place in the side.
