Florian Wirtz delivered a superb display as Germany secured a 2-0 win over Serbia in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday, giving Jurgen Klopp his first victory as manager.
Wirtz played a key role in the opening goal. His effort struck the woodwork before falling to Tom Bischof, who drilled the ball into the roof of the net.
The 23-year-old sealed the victory in the second half, firing the ball into the bottom corner after a brilliant team move.
Wirtz offered an insight into his outstanding display, potentially giving a hint at how he can improve at Liverpool.
“It was incredibly fun,” he told the media after the match. “The players around me made it easy. We had a lot of movement in midfield. We were all really up for it.”
Wirtz’s comments offer Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola an insight into how to get the best out of him.
However, his struggles at Liverpool can’t be attributed solely to the movement around him. He also often drops deep into the midfield, preventing him from being decisive in the attacking third.
He has struggled with the Premier League’s physicality, making it easier for opponents to dispossess him. No Liverpool player is losing more possession per league game than he is this season.
Iraola has continued to back Wirtz, but he must find consistency to keep his place in the team.
