Jarell Quansah has opened up on his decision to leave Liverpool for Bayer Leverkusen this summer.
The 22-year-old, who has been called up to the latest England squad, came through the Liverpool academy and went on to play 58 times for the first team in all competitions.
But after a lack of game time last season, he opted to make the switch abroad and says he needed to test himself in a new environment.
“For me, I just wanted to keep progressing in a way where, as a young centre-back, you need games to improve,” he said.
“I’ve obviously been learning off some of the best players around me at the time at Liverpool, and being able to do that has been so good for my career.
“I could never let that down, it’s always been a big part of it. But at this point in my career, I’m 22 turning 23 and I’m going to be needing hundreds of games to be where I want to be at the end of the day.
“I think overall that’s why the decision was made and why I thought going abroad was best for me.
“It’s been good for myself to make that step and go abroad, because I just wanted game time.
“When you’re at a team like Liverpool, it’s not promised, because world-class players are all over the pitch.
“I just wanted somewhere where I know they can trust that I might make mistakes at times and I can develop under that and just keep pushing and keep pushing. I’m glad I’m able to show that now.”
