In a significant move for the regional league, former top-flight midfielder Jabulani Shongwe has committed to Phezulu FC, a club competing in the SAFA Mpumalanga ABC Motsepe League. The 35-year-old had been a free agent since his contract with Motsepe Foundation Championship side Upington City FC concluded in January 2025.

Shongwe, whose career includes notable spells with Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits, has immediately been integrated into the squad. He was part of the team that delivered a decisive 3-0 victory over Amsterdam United this past Sunday at the Lillian Ngoyi Stadium in Secunda.

Phezulu FC is strategically bolstering its roster with seasoned professionals. Alongside Shongwe, the team has also secured the services of 31-year-old midfielder Thabo Sekese, who brings experience from clubs like Cape Town All Stars, Richards Bay FC, and TS Sporting.

This infusion of proven talent is a clear statement of intent from the club, which currently leads Stream A of the provincial league. With 16 points from just six matches, Phezulu holds a three-point advantage over the nearest challenger, Middeldalburg United. The club's leadership is betting that the wisdom and skill of players like Shongwe and Sekese will be the key to not only winning the league title but also achieving success in the national playoffs and securing a coveted promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
