Former Palmeiras midfielder Léo Azevedo shines as Torreense stun Sporting in Taça de Portugal

Former Palmeiras midfielder Léo Azevedo was instrumental as second-tier Torreense claimed a shock Taça de Portugal triumph on Sunday.
Torreense beat Sporting CP 2-1 after extra time, with Kévin Zohi scoring the opener following an assist from Azevedo.
According to Nosso Palestra, the 22-year-old made 36 appearances this season, scoring three goals for Torreense. He joined permanently in July 2024 and is under contract until 2027 after leaving Palmeiras.
He arrived at Palmeiras at the end of 2020 for the Under-17s, then stood out with the Under-20s. In 2023 he played 45 games and impressed at the 2024 Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior before moving to Europe.
Founded in 1917, Torreense have celebrated their first major national title and secured a maiden UEFA Europa League place. Sporting finished Liga Portugal as runners-up behind Porto and will play in the next UEFA Champions League. Torreense now target promotion and face Casa Pia in a decisive tie.
