Former Sunderland forward Charlie Wyke retires from football aged 33 | OneFootball

Former Sunderland forward Charlie Wyke has retired from professional football aged 33. He made 114 appearances in three seasons for the club, featuring in the Papa John's Trophy win over Tranmere Rovers, Sunderland's first Wembley triumph since 1973.

In a statement, Wyke said that after much thought it was the right time to stop, adding that doctors once expected this day to come far sooner but he had proved them wrong.

He suffered a cardiac arrest during training at Wigan Athletic in 2021, then returned the following campaign before most recently playing for Carlisle United. He expressed gratitude to Leam Richardson and Dr Jonathan Tobin for actions that saved his life, and to family and friends for their support.

He reflected on a 15-year career across nine clubs, with promotions, a trophy at Wembley and dressing rooms shared with outstanding team-mates.

In 2024 he suffered injuries that led to 462 days of rehabilitation, so football again took a back seat. Some days were extremely difficult, but every step forward mattered, including showing his children the value of perseverance.

He is proud to have ignored doubters and to finish on his own terms. He thanked team-mates, staff and supporters, and paid special tribute to partner Chelsea, children Albie and Ava, his parents, brothers Matty and George, and agents Lee and Mark. Family is his greatest achievement, and he leaves with treasured memories and lasting friendships, excited for what comes next.
