The Newcastle United players looking to bounce back from defeat against Barcelona.
The matches coming thick and fast.
Champions League on Thursday, followed only there days later with Premier League action on Sunday.
The Bournemouth v Newcastle match a 2pm kick-off tomorrow.
So which Newcastle United players will Eddie Howe have to do without?
Yoane Wissa
The striker will be out for at least the next five matches including Bournemouth, due to a knee injury picked up on international duty. The NUFC Head Coach hoping Wissa will be able to return for Brighton away on Saturday 18 October:
Jacob Ramsey
The former Villa player also remains out and won’t be back either until after the October international break, hopefully for Brighton as well.
The winger completes his three match domestic ban and will be available for all matches again, starting with Bradford on Wednesday night.
Fabian Schar
Straight after the Barcelona match, Eddie Howe was asked about the Swiss defender after he was forced off with what appeared to be a head injury:
“I have got no more information right now. I am in the hands of the doctors.
“The only message I had was that he was OK to continue, then it became clear that he couldn’t.”
On Friday, the player himself gave an update.
Fabian Schar via his personal social media stating:
“Disappointed not to have got more from the [Barcelona] game but plenty more points to pick up this campaign!
“Unfortunately, I am gonna miss a few games but hope to be back soon.
“Wor Flags – unbelievable as always.”
This appears to confirm Schar was suffering from concussion. So it looks like he will miss these next three games against Bournemouth, Bradford and Arsenal due to concussion protocols.
Kieran Trippier
There is a doubt over the England defender who turned 35 on Friday. He limped off with a quarter of an hour to go of the Barcelona match and was replaced by Sven Botman. I would guess he will be on the bench at best.
Jacob Murphy
Another player with maybe doubts as to whether he well be considered as a starter on Sunday.
Murphy was on the bench against Barcelona and introduced with less than half an hour of the game to go, getting an assist for Gordon’s goal.
After the match, Eddie Howe revealed:
“Jacob Murphy is nursing an achilles problem and we just want to keep the majority of the squad as fit and healthy for as long as possible.”
So four Newcastle United players definitely ruled out against Bournemouth, plus I can’t see Kieran Trippier considered as a starter. Though my guess is that Jacob Murphy will be ok to start if Eddie Howe chooses to do so, though Anthony Elanga was very good against Barcelona and I will be surprised if he isn’t in the team. Maybe a more positive selection dilemma for Eddie Howe there, possibly both of them playing and Elanga switching to the other wing, or used in a another different role and possibly a formation change.
