Fowler extends City stay

Manchester City are delighted to announce that Mary Fowler has signed a contract extension until the summer of 2027.

Initially joining City as a 19-year-old from Montpellier in the summer of 2022, the Australia international has established herself as one of the WSL’s most exciting attacking talents and has become a key player for Club and Country.

She enjoyed her finest campaign to date in 2024/25, being named in the PFA WSL Team of the Year for the first time despite having her season cut short by an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture in April 2025.

In total, Fowler has featured 87 times for City, scoring 21 goals and assisting 22 in the process.

Despite still being just 22, she’s also already represented Australia 64 times and helped them reach the World Cup semi-finals in 2023.

Speaking about the extension, Mary said: “[It’s] Really exciting. City has felt like home for me for quite a while now so to continue this journey with them, I’m really proud to do that.

“Enjoying my football is a big part of me playing well and City has created an environment where I can flourish.

“I love working with the girls who are here.”

Director of Football Therese Sjogran added: “Mary’s a really important figure for us on and off the pitch, so we’re delighted she’s agreed to extend her stay at the Club.

“She’s a tremendous talent, but the way she’s improved each year since joining City speaks volumes of her attitude and hard work off the pitch.

“We’re excited to see what the future holds for this team, and Mary will be a huge part of that once she’s back to her best after injury.”

Fowler’s time at City has been one of year-on-year progression.

She’d was already touted as one of the game's most exciting young talents long before moving to the Joie Stadium but, over the past three years, she’s gone from showing tantalising glimpses to consistently delivering when it matters.

Indeed, Fowler’s performances were one of the few positives to take from 2024/25, a season where City fell below our usual lofty standards.

The only player to hit double figures for goals and assists in all competitions, she was also named in the PFA WSL Team of the Year for the first time – an honour voted for by her fellow professionals.

It’s telling that she was recognised by her peers, as some of Fowler’s best qualities are the ones which are often considered indispensable to both coaches and team-mates.

An extremely intelligent and versatile footballer, she’s capable of performing in numerous positions across the attack but also has an excellent work rate to match that skill on the ball. Those are qualities that often slip under the radar.

In her first season she grabbed five goals and three assists in 22 appearances, seven of which were starts, having often played in the midfield three or as an occasional centre forward.

But the following year, Fowler was regularly deployed on the right flank and provided six goals and nine assists from 30 appearances, 17 of them starts.

The real coming of age for the Australian was 2024/25 though – a season where City were blighted by injuries and Fowler was called upon to fill multiple positions.

Despite that adversity, she ended the campaign with ten goals and ten assists from 30 starts, mainly as a centre forward, all the while missing the final month of the campaign with an ACL rupture.

Her recovery certainly won’t be rushed, but it’s difficult not to get excited when thinking about what Fowler can still achieve when she returns to action in the coming months.
