Newcastle are cooling on Victor Froholdt as a replacement for Bruno Guimarães, with the 85 million euros release clause and a preference for greater experience pushing them towards other options, The Athletic reports.

The midfielder has been on their radar since before Porto signed him from Copenhagen a year ago. Newcastle sounded out his representatives, but Porto consider him not for sale and only his release clause would be entertained.

That threshold sits above what the club are prepared to pay for his profile. Guimarães moved to Arsenal for 87 million euros and was a leader at St James' Park, so the focus is on a more seasoned successor. Two closer fits are Angelo Stiller of Stuttgart and Manu Koné of Roma, both 25 and well versed in major leagues.

Despite Saudi-backed ownership, spending remains constrained. In June Newcastle reached an agreement with UEFA after breaking financial fair play rules, and Premier League regulations mean clubs outside Europe cannot spend more than 85% of income across rolling three-year cycles. That does not mean they cannot afford Froholdt, but it is a factor.

Froholdt scored the goal that won the Supertaça for Porto. At 20 and contracted until 2030, he has expressed satisfaction with life at the club and wants Champions League football, something Newcastle cannot offer this season.
