Notts County bounced back from League Two play-off semi-final heartbreak to enjoy a summer of extensive transfer business.

Martin Paterson’s first window in the job was hectic, as 11 new players walked through the doors at Meadow Lane, including the likes of Oliver Norburn, Matthew Dennis and Maziar Kouhyar.

Dennis in particular, has already proven to be an excellent addition, netting five times in the opening six League Two games, to top the division’s goalscoring charts.

The season didn’t begin brilliantly for County, as they failed to win in their first three matches. However, Paterson and Co. have turned things around recently, picking up seven points in their last three outings.

Following the culmination of the summer transfer window, Football League World’s Notts County fan pundit, Gareth Parr, believes that there were a couple of regrettable instances the club could’ve avoided.

“If you ask any Notts County fan about what we did wrong in the summer transfer window,” stated Gareth. “You'll almost universally get the response that not paying David McGoldrick whatever he wanted to stay is the biggest mistake.

“But from what I've heard, he wanted almost three times as much as the next highest paid player at the club. I guess the owners just couldn't justify that financial outlay on a player who might play 25 games, 30 games this season.

“That's what the average Notts County fan will say. Personally, I think the biggest, oddest piece of activity that's happened was the sale of Alex Bass.

“Notts County are still without a class, decent goalkeeper and he was the cornerstone of a really strong central core all the way up the pitch.

“So, I think that's the biggest thing that's going to cost us in the long term.”

Notts County will hope that Alex Bass decision doesn’t come back to bite them

When Bass was sold to Peterborough United earlier this summer, it was somewhat understandable, due to the fact that they are in a division higher than Notts County.

However, the 27-year-old is yet to feature for Posh during the 2025/26 campaign, with Norwich City loanee Vicente Reyes currently the preferred option.

If this rotational role was made apparent to Bass before he departed Meadow Lane, it could be argued that Notts County should’ve done more to keep him at the club.

Kelle Roos has shipped nine goals in his first six League Two matches and hasn’t looked overly convincing. There is still time for the Dutch shot-stopper to improve but Paterson and Co. will hope they don’t live to regret cashing in on Bass.
