Full EFL Cup draw: Chelsea handed home tie against Luton Town as Spurs take on Charlton and Newcastle lock horns with West Brom | OneFootball

Chelsea have been handed a favourable home draw against League One outfit Luton Town in the second round of the EFL Cup.

The Blues are among 11 Premier League sides entering the competition at this stage after missing out on European qualification.

The reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions will begin their campaign at Stamford Bridge against Jack Wilshere’s Luton.

Chelsea are favourites to progress, but the magic of cup upsets is what the beautiful game is all about.

Luton will relish the opportunity to visit west London and test themselves against one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs under former Arsenal midfielder Wilshere.

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur welcome Charlton Athletic, while Newcastle United face a home meeting with West Bromwich Albion.

There is only one all-Premier League clash in the second round, with Nottingham Forest hosting Leeds United at the City Ground.

Everton have been drawn away to Preston North End, giving David Moyes the chance to return to one of his former clubs.

Brentford face a potentially tricky trip to Birmingham City, while Fulham will host AFC Wimbledon in an all-London encounter at Craven Cottage.

Over in Southampton, the Saints entertain West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers travel to Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley make the trip to Bradford City.

Ipswich Town and Leicester City will also meet in an eye-catching clash, while Cardiff City take on Norwich City.

The second-round fixtures are scheduled to take place during the week commencing August 24.

For Chelsea, the draw represents a relatively straightforward route into the third round, but Xabi Alonso will be wary of taking Luton lightly as he looks to make a strong start to his first season in charge.

Chelsea will be looking to make a deep run in cup competitions so they can hopefully break their Wembley duck.

It won’t be easy as they face competition from Newcastle, who recently won the competition and Spurs, eager to prove themselves in Roberto De Zerbi’s first full season.

Later on, more top clubs enter the competition, setting up another competitive campaign.
