Gabriel Barbosa became Santos’s third-highest post-Pelé scorer after scoring and providing an assist in a 2-1 victory over Remo at the Mangueirão in the Brasileirão’s 28th round.
Diario Do Peixe reports on the landmark. He now has 105 goals in 252 appearances for Santos, trailing only Neymar, 158, and Robinho, 111, in the post-Pelé era.
Across the club’s history, he sits 21st on the all-time list. He is also the sixth-highest scorer in the Brasileirão since 1971, with 131 goals in 313 matches.
Barbosa said some interpret his confidence as arrogance, but he works hard and trusts himself, and that if given the right conditions and a run of games he will keep scoring.
Born in São Bernardo do Campo, he was spotted by Zito in futsal and joined Santos’s academy aged eight in 2004. He debuted in 2013 and across his 2013-2016 and 2018 spells recorded 210 games, 84 goals and 13 assists.
He helped the club win back-to-back Paulistas in 2015 and 2016, finished as Brasileirão top scorer in 2018 with 18, and led the Copa do Brasil scoring charts in 2014, 2015 and 2018. This season he has 21 goals, 10 assists and 42 appearances, and is on loan from Cruzeiro until the end of the year.
