Santos goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão has undergone left-shoulder surgery in Belo Horizonte and posted an upbeat message as he begins recovery.

According to Globo.com, he had been managing significant pain that worsened after the Atlético-MG tie in the Copa Sudamericana, prompting him to bring the operation forward from the season’s end.

The procedure was performed by Cruzeiro’s head of medical, Dr Sergio Campolina, with whom Brazão previously had knee surgery. On social media he shared a photo with the doctor, thanked him, said Jesus is good and that he would be back soon.

He will now recuperate at home before starting physiotherapy at Santos. The plan is for a measured recovery without pressure to reclaim the starting spot, aiming to be fully fit next season. The club have 11 Campeonato Brasileiro fixtures remaining this year.

Brazão has 50 appearances and 63 goals conceded, and ceded his place to Diógenes against Remo last time out. The new starter erred for the opposition goal and is likely to come under scrutiny after the international break, with João Paulo the immediate back-up and former number one.

Third-choice is João Pedro, an 18-year-old academy prospect viewed as highly talented, though the club are cautious about exposing him too soon.
